Lamp Shades
A bulb’s light goes out equally in all directions. Looking at the bulb directly can be uncomfortable and dangerous. Bare bulbs are sometimes used in places where the light is precious and where someone’s not likely to accidentally stare right at it. Staring directly into a bare bulb can damage the eye. Using lamp shades can help you block the eye from direct exposure to the glare of the bulb, and to direct the light where you want it to go. Lamp shades for floor lamps, for example, use cloth or paper with a loose weave that will help block significant amounts of light in a horizontal direction. The shade also permits light to flow from the top and bottom which allows light to be more focused below the shade making it easier for the person sitting in a nearby chair to read.
